The Smart Peak Flow story is not something we hear about every day.

Starting from a Kickstarter project, they emerged as a successful startup with a unique solution for patients suffering from asthma. Patients can keep track of their peak flow to help manage their condition. Smart Peak Flow and its custom application Smart Asthma enables users to do it in a quick and convenient manner.

The breathing measurement device

Today many people suffer from various types of asthma, but treatments have not changed much over time. Smart Peak Flow is an application for improving the lives of those that suffer from asthma. It measures their breathing abilities using a specially designed hardware solution. The aim of Smart Peak Flow is to offer new alternatives for treating this illness and an efficient tool for both patients and physicians. The MVP test results of Smart Peak Flow demonstrated a clear need for developing this solution in a “regulated” environment.

When the client sought a partner to perform the development work, they sought companies with experience in developing healthcare-related software and requisite experience in quality control. The project kick-off involved a one-month pilot effort, the successful completion of which led to our current long-term collaboration. We collaborated throughout the pilot with an expert in the area of frequency processing. The team used a number of optimization procedures to achieve the best possible result. In order to test measurements, our client provided a machine that simulates human breathing that was used by the team to continuously check the accuracy of results. This process significantly increased the efficiency of the development.

What was the main goal?

One of the main goals was to obtain the CE mark by the end of the first phase. In order to adhere to regulations, peak flow measurements had to reach a specific, required accuracy. The IronRooster team has worked over 15,000 hours on this solution to date. In 2018 with Smart Peak Flow, we successfully obtained the CE mark.
